CALL FOR PAPERS

We are pleased to announce that the annual postgraduate colloquium in the School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics will take place on May 21st 2012.

This event will offer new academics from all research areas the opportunity to participate in an exciting and enjoyable conference-style event, where they can present their work and ideas in a supportive and intellectually stimulating environment.

The theme of this year’s colloquium is Boundaries.

Abstracts should be emailed to Bridie Moore (blmoore1[at]sheffield[dot]ac[dot]uk) by 30th March 2012

We invite proposals for papers that cover any aspect of this concept, including, but not limited to, these areas:

  • Personal space; public space and human interaction

  • Margins; liminal spaces; peripheries

  • Geography; topography; physical boundaries

  • Travel, migration, mobility and cultural exchange

  • Nationality; community; citizenship and identity

  • Exclusion, displacement and insider/outsider status

  • Technology, science and new frontiers

  • Gender, ethnicity, disability and subjectivity

  • Faith, belief and scepticism

  • Historical eras and historical change

  • Legitimacy and illegitimacy

  • Policing; law-enforcing; law-making and law-breaking

  • Sex, sexuality, sexual practices and sexual taboos

  • Genre demarcation; artistic categorisation

  • Canon-building; syllabus-construction and publishing practices

  • Text and reader: stage and audience

  • Taste, decency, censorship and illicit language

  • Differential roles in work, family and leisure settings

  • Translation, adaption and reworking

  • Age, ageing and generational separation

  • Life and death

We invite interested individuals to submit a 250-word abstract (plus titles) on the topic of your choice. Final papers should be 15-20 minutes in length. Deadline for abstracts is 30th March.
